Holiday Chinese was created by Zhuang Dinghua, an NUS Business School student with a passion in Chinese history and culture. After noticing the sharp decline in the Chinese language fluency amongst young Chinese Singaporeans, she has always wanted to do something to mitigate this occurance.
During her trip to China, she realised that China's digital network is mostly monolingual and hence, is hard to navigate by foreigners whose first language is not Mandarin Chinese. Many of her Singaporean peers, despite being ethnically Chinese, also struggle to converse with the locals, or use the mobile applications. Hence, she realised that the Chinese literacy amongst Singaporean Chinese has reached a concerning level and something must be done before Singaporean's much prided talent of producing bilingual citizens reach its end.
After a study trip to Beijing, China, where our founder has had the opportunity to network and engage with businesses and start-ups in China, including COL Group Co Ltd (中文在线), a digital publishing company based in China. She decided to start an online initiative to help the dwindling Mandarin fluency amongst Singaporeans youths.
Before this online venture, Dinghua has had numerous relevant work experience in the field, including working in the Singapore's Ministry of Education's Headquarters, a Chinese history museum, and at a tuition centre teaching Chinese language and planning the Chinese language curriculum.
Mission
To improve literacy in Chinese language amongst Singaporean Chinese, and making the learning of Chinese language and culture more easy and engaging for the international audience.
Vision
To make Chinese culture and history more accessible worldwide by presenting it to the global audience in English language.
